musical matrimony 004
This edition of Musical Matrimony goes out to a producer we’ve grown to love: 88 Keys. His early solo work has blossomed into collaborations with artists like Cudi, Kanye, and Mr. Wonderful. Keys’ signature production style combines choosey sampling with deft keyboard, drum and other instrumental layers, and this special sound resonates around the globe. Here’s a four course feast centered around the man himself.

Who isn’t here for all night lovin? In 1982 Imagination laid down this silky R&B selection for out audio arousal. In 2008 today’s subject picked out a perfect sample and lined it up for a hilarious hit.
new.
Keys produced the latest from-the-grave feature from the late legend Mac Miller, with a little sweet sonic help from Sia. Relying heavily on the oft-sampled “Benjie” by Valerie Simpson, the track transitions from a smooth open to explosive, cathartic horn hits over a 70s drum sample from Christine Perfect. It’s just the good feeling Mac fans need.

Keys teamed up with producer big-brother Kanye West to bring this riotous E.D. anthem. Layering the smooth harmonies of Imagination over a tight drum loop and meandering trumpet riff, the duo find room to bring laughs to a luscious track.
blue.
This is a stretch, but stay with me here. On the beat he made with Party Supplies for Action Bronson’s City Boy Blues, 88 Keys digs into blues elements and samples Luftpost by Kraan, which definitely employs blues elements in their guitar interplay. Check out both below and see what you think.
