Tuesday Tunes: September 3

Howdy to all of our loyal Tuesday Tunists! This week we bring you two wonderful new sonic gems, one of which will likely surprise you. It certainly made a mockery of my expectations. Hopefully these tracks can help y’all to ease out of the warm weather season. Thanks for tun(e)ing in.

Whitney’s new album, Forever Turn Around, is a masterfully crafted project. It maintains the duo’s characteristically raw, garage-recorded sound while reaching a level of melodic depth and rich instrumentation light-years ahead of their past work. The song “Giving Up” is my favorite piece from their recent output. It harkens back to 70s soul and rock with a lighthearted tinge of folk adding a hint of flavor. The trumpet solo near the song’s halfway point is glorious. In short, you won’t regret opening your ears to “Giving Up”.

*Queue ominous piano melody indicating an unexpected turn of events*. Post Malone makes indie rock songs now? His newest single, “Circles” is an overwhelmingly exciting release. The song is a far cry from his bread and butter: obvious and repetitive teen-oriented trap. Although he didn’t become the world’s most substantive lyricist overnight, “Circles” is actually pretty meaningful and easy to relate to. His sweet n’ raspy voice plays perfectly over the guitar melodies used in the instrumental. It’s always dope to see when the most commercially successful and/or “basic” artists are willing to try something new. This is no exception.
