Avery Cordray: Loom
Avery Cordray debuts her latest collection, Loom, this Saturday from 5-10 pm at Los Angeles’ Rhythm Visuals Gallery. An L.A. painter by way of Houston, Cordray uses her most recent project as a chance to explore connected shape and color, and in doing so call attention to the illusions and perceived situations we allow to muddle our realities. Cordray speaks of her work in interplay of layered shapes in space, saying of her process, “I create and draw connecting roads with shapes on canvas. I try to lay different spaces on top of each other, riffing off of the colors I choose to create shapes that fit.” Cordray’s deft use of meandering lines draws the eye to connections between colorfully crafted spaces and carefully layered shapes that simultaneously explode with texture and pull you deeper into her work.
Drawing influences from surrealist works, Rococco color schemes, and abstract expressionism, the artist relies on what she describes as “radical movements” in her current environment as the inspiration for her work. Cordray describes the mindset, primarily wrestling with “falsehoods” and mental projections, that spurs her art, saying, “I often create false situations in my mind; create feelings that aren’t real or necessary. You know, making fake scenarios in my head. I’m very aware that how I assess future events differs from others, and this most often leads to negative outcomes. I recreate those experiences on canvas by playing with shapes and how they react and interact in synthesized, perceived, or non-existent space. I want the viewer to be patient and see what develops before they jump to fill in the blanks. Catch yourself before assuming.”
