Fat Tony: Tour Time
Houston’s resident rap nerd is on the road again. Last week, Fat Tony announced a U.S. and Canada tour after spending time working on his show, Vice Live, and spinning summer DJ sets. He spent his time off showcasing a diverse skill set, and his tour only emphasizes that versatility. The “10,000 Hours” rapper returns to touring with some lineups only he could pull off.
Fat Tony in full Texas tilt.
On this 16-stop tour, Fat Tony will perform alongside names you would expect a rap lineup, like the burgeoning BbyMutha, the dope duo Blackalicious and the people’s champ Talib Kweli. In Fat Tony style, he’ll also perform on bills with electronic artists like Cautious Clay and Taylor McFerrin. And, in perhaps the most delightful, genre-eschewing turn of events this fall, Fat Tony will play seven stops with London rockers black midi on the North American stretch of their tour.
If you haven’t heard black midi, strap in and prepare for technically tight, hauntingly turbulent tunes from hard-rocking BRIT school buddies. Touring off the strength of their residency at Brixton’s The Windmill, work with producer Dan Carey, and their resulting debut album Schlagenheim, black midi aren’t the first group you’d think of on tour with an American rapper. That’s the power of Fat Tony.
Fat Tony brings it all together.
His diverse tastes and eclectic style set him apart from, well, everybody. No other rapper, and few other musicians or entertainers, could star in a TV show, mix Brooks & Dunn with Too Short, take off on a genre-less tour, and still stay true to the underground from whence he came. Fat Tony is an American treasure, a Texas gem, a Houston icon, and he’s coming to a city near you. Don’t miss him.
